How to Score 95% in CBSE Class 12 Maths — A Complete Guide

By U.K. Mishra May 2025 8 min read South Delhi

After 26 years of teaching Class 12 Mathematics to students across South Delhi — Vasant Kunj, Saket, Green Park, Greater Kailash and more — I have identified the exact patterns that separate students who score 95%+ from those who score in the 70s. This guide covers everything you need.

Understand the Marking Scheme First

Before you open your textbook, download the CBSE Class 12 Maths sample paper and marking scheme from cbse.gov.in. Understand exactly how marks are distributed — 1-mark, 2-mark, 3-mark, and 5-mark questions. Most students lose marks not because they don't know the answer but because they don't present it the way CBSE expects.

Key Insight

In CBSE board exams, showing your working step-by-step earns partial marks even if the final answer is wrong. A student who shows all steps but makes one arithmetic error can score 4/5, while a student who writes only the final answer gets 0/5 for the same question.

Chapter-wise Priority for 95%+

Not all chapters carry equal weight. Focus your time accordingly:

The Reverse Checking Method

This is the single technique I have taught every student for 26 years. After computing an answer, substitute it back into the original equation or use the inverse operation to verify. For integration, differentiate your answer. For a system of equations, substitute your x and y back. This takes 30 seconds and saves you from losing marks on correct working with a calculation slip.

3-Month Study Plan

Month 1 — Concept Building

Complete NCERT examples and exercises chapter by chapter. Do not skip any example. Every NCERT example is a potential board question variant. Focus on understanding proofs for theorems — they appear as 3 and 5 mark questions.

Month 2 — Practice and Speed

Solve 5 previous year CBSE papers under timed conditions. Identify your weak chapters. Create a personal error log — every mistake you make, write it down with the correct approach. Review this log daily.

Month 3 — Revision and Mock Tests

Revise only your error log and formulae. Solve 3 full mock papers per week. Time yourself strictly. Practice neat, stepped presentation for all 5-mark questions.

The Formula Sheet Strategy

Create a single A4 sheet with all formulae — trigonometric identities, integration standard forms, differentiation rules, vector formulae. Revise this sheet every morning for the last 30 days. By exam day it will be effortless recall.
